How it ends

By a stroke of luck, McQueen manages to stay ahead of Eve and ambushes her. As she fights him off, she relives the day she escaped from her father. Roarke gets a feeling that something is wrong and finds her. McQueen is taken into custody.

Last words

And beside Roarke, with the cat snoring, she watched New York break through the clouds.

Dallas to New York, she thought. Where she belonged.

Hook-ups, break-ups and deaths

McQueen kills several people in the course of the novel, and he kidnaps one woman. He abducts a teenage girl and rapes her, mostly off-page, but she survives. He also rapes two adult women, both off-page.

  • Flashbacks to Eve’s past and her original arrest of McQueen, which involves remembering the children he had captured and tortured
  • McQueen’s preferred weapon is a knife, so there’s quite a bit of blood
  • There are a few scenes showing the impact of the rapes on McQueen’s victims, and while they’re not graphic, some readers may find these very disturbing
